The Amazon Epiphyte Network: A First Glimpse Into Continental-Scale Patterns of Amazonian Vascular Epiphyte Assemblages

چکیده
Epiphytes are still an understudied plant group in Amazonia. The aim of this study was to identify distributional patterns and conservation priorities for vascular epiphyte assemblages (VEA) across We compiled the largest Amazonian plot database date, through a multinational collaborative effort 22 researchers 32 field sites located four countries – Epiphyte Network (AEN). addressed following continental-scale questions by utilizing AEN comprising 96,448 individuals, belonging 518 taxa, growing on 10,907 tree individuals (phorophytes). Our objectives here are, first, present qualitative evaluation geographic distribution highlight regional lacunae as future quantitative inventories. Second, floristic Amazonia-wide VEA third, combine multivariate analyses rank abundance curves, controlled major habitat types, determine how vary geographically ecologically based types. Three most striking found that: (1) spatially structured similarity decays with distance; (2) core oligarchic taxa account more than half all individuals; (3) extensive sampling gaps exist, mainly highly threatened southern deforestation belt. This work represents first step toward unveiling pattern VEA, which is important guide ecology species ranges once grows allowing clearer view patterns.

متن کاملExceptional Epiphyte Diversity on a Single Tree
An exhaustive survey of vascular epiphytes on a single mature canopy tree in a Costa Rican tropical premontane wet forest revealed an extraordinary level of epiphyte diversity. A total of 126 morphospecies representing at least 52 genera and 21 plant families were found growing epiphytically on the phorophyte (host tree), accounting for more than 1% of the entire vascular flora of Costa Rica. T...
متن کاملHow diverse are epiphyte assemblages in plantations and secondary forests in tropical lowlands?
The on-going destruction of old-growth forests puts tropical forest species under great pressure because of the resulting loss of habitat. An important biotic component of these forests are vascular epiphytes, which structurally depend on trees. In human-modified landscapes potential hosts may still be present, e.g. in the form of isolated remnant trees, small groups of planted trees, in patche...
متن کاملEvaluating factors that predict the structure of a commensalistic epiphyte-phorophyte network.
A central issue in ecology is the understanding of the establishment of biotic interactions. We studied the factors that affect the assembly of the commensalistic interactions between vascular epiphytes and their host plants. We used an analytical approach that considers all individuals and species of epiphytic bromeliads and woody hosts and non-hosts at study plots. We built models of interact...
متن کاملEffects of epiphytic lichens on host preference of the vascular epiphyte Tillandsia usneoides
We investigated the potential for nonvascular epiphytic species (primarily lichens) to affect the quality of different host tree species for the vascular epiphyte Tillandsia usneoides in the southeastern USA. Different host tree species had substantially different abundances of Tillandsia, and these abundances were correlated with the composition of nonvascular epiphyte communities. In greenhou...
